What’s happening to the White Gates?

Visitors to Monken Hadley Common will no doubt have seen the damage to the white gate at the Hadley Road entrance to the Common.  The damage happened in the early hours of 19th August, and was caused by a large articulated truck.  The incident was recorded on nearby CCTV, and the Trust is now in contact with the relevant insurers.

You may not be aware that all of the Common’s White Gates are Grade 2 listed buildings.  As a result, repairs have to be very carefully thought through, and must be carried out by suitably skilled craftspeople.  We are therefore in the process of contacting such firms, in order to estimate the costs of repair, which will form part of the relevant insurance claim.

Once this is all agreed, we will then work with the London Borough of Barnet to also reinstate the protective “crash barrier”.

Minor repairs were carried out in the summer to the gate next to Monken Hadley Church, and our volunteers re-painted both this and the gate at The Crescent.  We are also aware that other gates (particularly the gate on Games Road) need some repair work, and once we have quotes for this we will be able to work out the best way to fund the work.  Listed Gates cost a lot to maintain – if you are able to help us with funding, please either go to our Donate page, or get in touch with the Treasurer at treasurer@mhctrust.org.uk
