2026 Festival – Music by Jack’s Lake
Final Concert of the summer – Bullrushes
The final concert of our summer series took place on Saturday 8th August at 6.00pm. The programme included pieces by Mahler, Couperin, Ravel, Villa-Lobos and Rameau, and finished with a rousing finale from Henry Wood (think Last Night of the Proms). We were delighted to welcome Cellist Miwa Rosso and Harpsichordist (actually a spinet) and Viola Alistair Scahill, along with our regular team of Charles Mutter and Ilona Domnich. As well as the wonderful musicality of our “home team”, Charles and Ilona, Miwa Rosso’s Cello in the Ravel and, of course, “Tom Bowling”, was highly emotional, while Alistair’s virtuosity at the keyboard was astounding. The spinet he played is a modern one, by Andrew Garlick (Somerset), and many of our concert-goers gathered round it afterwards to look more closely at the period map of Paris inside the lid. The team were joined for some beautiful singing by two of Ilona’s students, Arabella and Delilah. Around 300 concert-goers attended, along with their picnics and some very well-behaved dogs. Thank you all for coming and supporting us – we look forward to welcoming you to future events.

The concert featured performances from Ilona’s highly talented students Arabella and Delilah
Mahler Symphony 4, last movement:
This movement of the Symphony presents heaven as a joyful paradise of perfect peace, happiness and abundance, free from suffering or earthly troubles. Angels and saints sing, dance and celebrate together, while plentiful food, drink and music create an atmosphere of generosity and delight. With nature freely providing its riches and heavenly music surpassing anything on earth, the text portrays heaven as an eternal place of harmony and bliss.
Villa Lobos Bachianas Brasileiras n.5:
This piece describes a peaceful midnight landscape where glowing clouds and the rising moon transform the night with beauty and serenity. As nature falls silent, the moonlight reflects across the sea, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that awakens deep emotions of wonder, longing and quiet sadness, while all of nature seems to honour the moon’s radiant presence.
