07 May Planting Event
The planting event was organised by Enfield Council on the Common on the morning of 19th May. This was the first of two replanting events in the site area of Enfield Council’s sustainable urban drainage scheme on the Common for the benefit of houses on Parkgate Avenue and Parkgate Crescent. The event focused on the wetland and marginal aquatic planting, and a range of wildflower and pond-edge seed mixes will also be planted around the margins.
A second planting day is proposed for October or November, which is a more suitable time for introducing shrubs. This will help avoid the need for constant watering over the summer and reduce the risk of plant loss.
Our grateful thanks to all of the volunteers who helped with this planting activity, and to Enfield Council for their support and expertise. Feel free to email curator@mhctrust.org.uk for any query about this event.
The event has been reported by local journalist Nick Jones on the Barnet Society website – his report can be found here.
The plants included:
royal fern | male fern | flowering rush |
purple loosestrife | fibre optic plants (scirpus cernuus) | water crowfoot |
hard rush | soft rush | hemp agrimony |
phalarope gardener’s garters | water mint | marsh marigold |
yellow flag | pendulous sedge |
