09 Apr Engineering work at Jack’s Lake – All done
The engineering work on the southern bank of Jack’s Lake is now finished. Metal piling has been driven into the lake bed to form a new retaining wall, and this has been back-filled with “puddling clay” to rebuild the original bank. Coir matting and rolls containing newly-grown waterside plants have now been added, and they all seem to be gradually establishing themselves. We’re hoping that by the end of the summer the bank will once again look fully natural, but meantime we’ll keep a close eye …
Initial indications are that the very wet area below the bank – where the leak could be seen – is now dry, so we are pretty confident the work has been successful.
The engineers have tried to smooth out the pathway from Games Road which was used to access the site, and inevitably there will still be some ruts showing, however with a little rain nature will soon sort this out.
The work was funded through a grant from the Community Infrastructure Levy fund, through which Barnet Council support local community projects, and we are hugely grateful to LBB for the award. On 24th April, local MP Dan Tomlinson visited the site to see for himself. For a report of the visit, please take a look at the Barnet Society newsletter article by Nick Jones.
Thank you to all visitors for your patience during the work – as ever if there is anything you want to discuss or let us know, please contact curator@mhctrust.org.uk, or treasurer@mhctrust.org.uk.
And here are some pictures of the work before, during and after. Enjoy!
